How To Deal With Anxiety At Work

December 6, 2021, by HR Search & Rescue

Work is something that can easily cause stress in our daily lives. With constant deadlines, goals, and tasks to complete, work can quickly become overwhelming. Once your work begins to negatively affect your health and cause anxiety, it may be time to consider managing your workplace anxiety. Determining how to curb these anxious feelings and re-establish your relationship with work.

5 Ways To Manage Workplace Anxiety

In this article, we will be providing some helpful tips on how you can attempt to manage workplace anxiety and gain control over the stress that seems to hold so much power over your workday.

Self-Evaluation

One of the easiest places to start is with some simple reflection. Try to think about what may be causing your feelings of anxiety and what about your job stresses you out so much. Do you feel rushed or overworked, or do you just not like working at this job? Do you not get along with a manager or coworker? This is an important place to start because knowing what is causing the majority of your stress can help you lay out a roadmap toward fixing the issue.

Confront the Issues

Once you have identified the issues that are causing you distress, try to think about why they are affecting you so heavily. If it is because you feel overworked, maybe try to have an honest conversation with management about your workload and how it is affecting your mental health as well as your capacity to be a good worker. Be sure to be honest and open about the situation in order to help management understand where you are coming from. From here, it is up to you to decide whether or not it is healthy to move on with said employer.

Additionally, you can try to communicate your thoughts or complaints to a trusted coworker who shares a similar position to yours. This is helpful for both releasing your anxious thoughts and dealing with them as well as learning about what your coworker’s experiences are like. Learning about another employee’s position can help to shine some light on the different sides of the situation and could potentially give you a fresh perspective. Talking about anxiety with the right person can help you process these intense emotions, and it can be validating if the person is supportive and understanding. They might also have ideas or suggestions to help you cope.

Take Care of Yourself!

This is one of the most important things to keep in mind if you suffer from anxiety. It can be so easy to let anxiety control your thoughts for most of the day, which makes it important to force yourself to practice self-care. Eating healthy, fitting in some exercise, and practicing mindful meditation can help you to refresh your mind when it feels like you are starting to become overwhelmed by anxious feelings. Try to remind yourself that you are not your thoughts and that the story your anxious mind is telling you may not actually be true.

Take Some Time To Yourself

One of the easiest ways to allow anxiety to build up under the surface is to overwork yourself. This relates back to our point of taking care of yourself, as self-care is a big part of a healthy work-life balance. If this balance is out of whack, you will be much more prone to feeling controlled by anxiety and stress. Try to take some time during the day to enjoy the outdoors, focus on a hobby, or relax your mind with a book.

Don’t Isolate

Humans are social creatures by nature, so if you are not spending time connecting with close friends and colleagues, you are setting yourself up for a tough time with anxiety and/or depression. When you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed by anxiety, just a simple, lighthearted conversation with a close friend or relative can help center your feelings and bring you back down to earth.

Take A Moment To Reflect

Anxiety in some form or another affects everyone during their professional career at some point. The key is to listen to it and think about why it is happening. Are you taking care of your body and mind? Have you been overworked? Are you isolating yourself from friends and family? In our hectic lives, it can be easy to let these things slide. If you suffer from anxiety, it is important to keep these tips in mind and ensure you are taking action towards curbing anxious tendencies.
